Candidate Statement
I’ve been active in the Canadian internet scene since before .ca existed and have been a proud CIRA member for many years. I bring a unique perspective, having witnessed the birth of the internet in Canada while also watching how my young family uses communication tools in new and creative ways. I remember floppy disks, but I also host my podcast in the cloud.
I have experience serving on boards, managing budgets, designing websites, and navigating government regulation. I hold a B.Sc. in Biology, a Master’s in Education, and have passed all three CFA exams, giving me strong financial literacy and strategic insight.
If we’re not discussing the internet in the context of the AI revolution, we’re missing the point. We are at a critical moment where .ca can either lose its relevance or become an even more trusted part of the global information infrastructure. I believe CIRA should serve its members while also advancing the broader interests of Canada, ensuring our internet remains secure, innovative, and trustworthy for everyone.
The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) is the steward and guardian of the .ca domain, a vital part of Canada’s brand on the internet. While .ca represents Canada online, CIRA is much more than a domain registry.
As a not-for-profit, member-based, purpose-driven organization, CIRA builds a trusted internet for all Canadians – one that is free, open, interoperable, and equitable. It reinvests in Canada’s digital future through programs, partnerships, and services that go beyond the .ca domain.
CIRA matters because it safeguards something uniquely Canadian while driving initiatives that benefit all communities. It connects the technical with the practical: from strengthening networks to funding community grants that bridge the digital divide.
In short, CIRA is both the guardian of Canada’s digital identity and a catalyst for a safer, stronger, and more inclusive internet for the future.
I want to serve on CIRA’s Board of Directors because I am deeply committed to advancing a trusted, inclusive, and innovative Canadian internet. Having been active in Canada’s internet community since before the .ca domain was established, I bring a long-term perspective on how digital identity, governance, and technology intersect with public and private interests.
I would contribute to the board by offering strategic insight grounded in hands-on experience with technology adoption, digital communication, and community engagement. I have led initiatives that connect technical solutions with practical outcomes, whether through program development, stakeholder collaboration, or public outreach.
My experience includes navigating complex regulatory and organizational environments, guiding projects from concept to implementation, and fostering partnerships that bridge digital gaps. I am confident that these skills—combined with my passion for Canada’s digital ecosystem—position me to help CIRA continue safeguarding the .ca domain while driving initiatives that strengthen Canada’s online future.
Over the next 3 to 5 years, I see three key challenges and opportunities for CIRA:
1. Cybersecurity and trust: As online threats grow, Canadians need a secure and resilient digital infrastructure. CIRA can lead in building trust through initiatives that protect users and strengthen network security. My experience in technology strategy and risk management equips me to help guide policies and programs that enhance security while keeping the internet open and accessible.
2. Relevance of the .ca domain: With global domains like .com, .io, and .ie, the specific website address is less central to users. This challenges .ca’s visibility but also provides an opportunity to promote its value as a trusted, uniquely Canadian digital identity. My background in communications and community engagement would help CIRA amplify the benefits of .ca and encourage broader adoption.
3. Evolving digital identity and governance: Emerging technologies like AI, IoT, and decentralized platforms are reshaping the internet. CIRA must innovate while safeguarding Canada’s digital identity. I bring strategic planning and governance experience to help navigate these changes while protecting core values.
By combining expertise in technology, communications, and community-focused initiatives, I would support CIRA in remaining both a trusted guardian of the .ca domain and a proactive driver of programs that strengthen Canada’s digital future.
