As a not-for-profit, member-based organization, CIRA’s members play a fundamental role in our governance by electing board members. Starting today until October 2, members will have the opportunity to elect four of the most qualified candidates to the board: three from the nomination committee slate and one from the members’ slate.
To our CIRA members: being an active participant in CIRA’s governance is where you’ll have the most impact towards our mission and is one of the ultimate ways to activate your role as a member.
Who is the best candidate to represent CIRA?
We want to help more Canadians get online with a .CA domain, re-invest in the development of a trusted internet for Canadians, strengthen our non-.CA product offerings and business and be a leading-edge, inclusive workplace that attracts and maintains top talent.
We’re looking for people who share this vision and can bring their skills and experience to drive innovation so CIRA can improve Canada’s internet.
The best candidate has the right skills to help CIRA advance its mission and take its work to the next level. They are professional and understand, above all else, that the role of the CIRA board is to represent the organization.
This year, there is a need for board members to have the following skills:
- Financial acumen and experience in Finance, Audit, Investments and Risk oversight at the Board level and in the Committee work, including one or more persons with current experience as an operational CFO with professional credentials (i.e. CPA, CFA, FMVA, etc.).
- Legal experience and understanding of the areas of law related to CIRA’s business, such as internet, IT and privacy, etc.
- Experience and knowledge in the Domain Name System (DNS) space as well as the national and global ecosystem in which CIRA operates.
Each year, CIRA’s governance committee submits a letter that outlines the diversity of skills and experience needed on the board, which we outlined briefly above. Check out the letter.

What is the role of CIRA members?
The last step in the election process (and the most important!) is to vote the most qualified candidates to the board. CIRA and the election candidates rely on member participation. CIRA members are responsible for electing a board who will work in the best interest of the organization. Voting starts today at 12:30 p.m. ET through an online ballot. Voting is easy and only takes a few minutes.
We will send an email to each eligible member on September 25 at approximately 1:30 p.m. ET containing a link to the new online voting system. Members can access the ballot by logging in with their membership username and password.
Members who are eligible to vote but haven’t received an email with the link to the voting system should contact a CIRA representative at [email protected]
CIRA’s election process lasts throughout the summer and ends in the fall. It has many stages and several opportunities for members to get involved. At every stage of the election, the CIRA team will reach out to members by email so that they can take full advantage of their membership and get involved in our governance process. In addition to emails from CIRA, candidates may also reach out to members directly to ask for votes.
Information on CIRA’s board election is available on our website.
