THE PROJECT
Saskatchewan Youth in Care and Custody (SYICCN) is a non-profit organization that advocates and supports youth aged 14-24 in or from foster care/young offender systems in Regina. Realizing the importance of digital technologies to improve the transition from government care to healthy adult independence, the SYICCN developed and piloted an app, Youth in Transit, to support youth entering, in, and leaving care.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
The app, which was co-designed with input from youth focus groups, has the goal of helping youth in care to sustain beneficial community connections with local and provincial community networks. SYICCN found that involving youth in the research and design of the app increased their digital literacy skills and had a positive impact on their relationships with one another and with the community resources available to them.
