THE PROJECT

The Office of First Nations & Métis Relations works with communities to collaborate and identify initiatives that will strengthen the University’s commitment to Indigenous communities. They developed the Circle of Indigenous Languages, a digital database and learning centre that helps preserve, teach and share Indigenous languages.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

CIRA funding allowed for the participation and compensation of more Indigenous language mentors, expanding the number of Indigenous languages featured on the site from just Cree and Saulteaux to Dene, Michif and both the male and female Dakota languages. They received hundreds of recordings of Indigenous languages from Indigenous organizations and historians, helping to build a richer cultural mosaic that can ultimately be shared by all Canadians and preserving those voices that would otherwise be lost.
