We all depend on the internet.

We’ve seen massive changes in the internet’s use since its inception. CIRA invests in solutions that make the internet more accessible, resilient and high performing for all Canadians, no matter where they live. Enter CIRA’s Internet Performance Test (IPT).

Running CIRA’s Internet Performance Test not only provides you with accurate feedback on the health of your own connection, but also contributes valuable, real-time and crowdsourced information to support connectivity across the country.

When the IPT launched, many technological trends of today were also in their infancy. Wearable tech and IoT devices were becoming everyday essentials, Bitcoin was gaining traction, self-driving cars hinted at a future of autonomous travel and major cable companies were shifting to streaming-only services. These innovations set the stage for a transformative era in Canadian connectivity, reflecting the global trends of the time.

Take a trip back in time to see everything that’s changed and what we’ve accomplished.

“Ten years of the IPT marks a major milestone in Canada’s connectivity journey. Thanks to community partnerships, we’ve built a powerful tool for change, but the digital divide persists. More than ever, we must keep investing, collaborating, and pushing forward to ensure fast, reliable internet is a reality for everyone, no matter where they live.”

Charles Noir, Vice-president, Community Investment, Policy & Advocacy

The data tells more of the story!

Every test run over the past decade has been anonymized and added to our national database. These tests show up as hexagonal test clusters on the internet performance map, as well as a series of interactive charts accessible under the “Data” tab on the IPT page.
