As a realtor, you spend a ton of time and energy helping people find their next home sweet home. So, we thought, “Hey—how can CIRA help realtors build a proper digital home for themselves?”
And what’s the first step to owning a digital home? Well, it isn’t finding a mature neighbourhood with easy access to Indian fusion joints. Nope—it’s creating an awesome .CA domain name for your real estate agent website!
Think of that domain as your internet calling card. Used wisely (and creatively), it can play a big role in your branding, be a powerful marketing tool and help boost your website’s visibility to new clients online. And as we all know—it’s about location, location, location—especially in search results pages!
Okay—we’ll cool it with the bad realtor jokes. For now.
Basic .CA domain naming tips
Right off the hop, let’s get into a few basic dos and don’ts for real estate domain names:
- DO: keep your domain name short, snappy and memorable. If someone can recall your domain name after one look, then you’re doing very well indeed. Plus, catchy domain names are easily typeable and shareable—which does wonders for your search traffic.
- DON’T: add hyphens and numbers—like “royal-citycondos2025.ca.” This just ups the chance of misspellings, typos and confusion.
- DO: make your domain name relevant to you. This might sound obvious, but if you’ve spent time developing your clientele and niche in the real estate world, then your domain name should reflect that too! Be sure to think about:
- What’s your core “mission” as a real estate business? Are you focused on luxury lofts, unique properties or more affordable homes? Is concierge-style customer service one of your trademarks?
- Who is your target audience? Are they investors, first-timer homebuyers?
- DON’T: engage in “keyword stuffing.” Being specific about your real estate niche, location or audience is one thing…but jamming as many keywords as possible into your domain name (e.g., “bestluxurydowntowncalgarycondosforsale.ca”) is not great practice. Not only does keyword stuffing hurt readability, but search engines like Google will de-prioritize your site in search results pages.
- NEVER: underestimate the power of .CA: choosing a .CA domain is one of the clearest signs to your potential clients that you’re a Canada-based realtor, and that you know, understand and are invested in the Canadian market.
Domain name ideas to get your creativity flowing
1. Focus on your specialty and geographical location: remember how we talked about making your domain name relevant to you and what you do? This is where you can bring in your real estate business’ focus and the geography you serve. That last bit is important—as including your location can help you rank higher in local search results!
For instance, if condos in Kingston are your main bread and butter, you might go with something like, “kingstoncondoliving.ca.” Or—if your focus is more luxury homes on the Vancouver waterfront, you could go with “luxhomesvancity.ca.”
2. Pick a name that pumps up your personal brand: let’s say you’re a solo realtor with a strong personal brand. Why not make that your domain name as well? It can be a great way to stand out from the pack and a chance to inject a little more familiarity (and personality) into the proceedings—i.e., “robbygreenwoodrealty.ca,” “shellysellshomes.ca.”
But—quick word of caution—avoid using more generic names, like “johnsmithrealty.ca,” which are more than likely taken and can make finding your website difficult, if not impossible for most!
3. Be a team player: work as part of a realtor team or brokerage? That’s prime fodder for your real estate office website’s domain name! It could be as simple as “bushandbarnes.ca,” or “directrealestate.ca” for example.
4. Create domains for your properties: in case you weren’t aware—you can register more than one .CA domain as part of your marketing strategy. The best part? It’s often cheap and easy for you to do so.
Here’s a prime example: register .CA domains for the top properties you might be selling. It makes things super-searchable for buyers and adds a true cool factor when they see a custom domain, like “180hibbertave.ca” or “240crystalrosedrive.ca.”
We hope this quick run-down of .CA domain naming dos and don’ts (and ideas) serves your real estate endeavours well!
